Things to do in Cranleigh - Your guide to Surrey's largest village

There's something quietly special about Cranleigh. It bills itself as the largest village in England, a claim that raises a smile until you actually spend a morning here and realise it's entirely justified. The High Street has the warmth and familiarity of a proper community, with independent shops, cosy cafés, and the kind of unhurried pace that feels increasingly rare, all reasons why we felt it would be a great home for The Tog Boutique.

Whether you're visiting for the first time or you've lived here for years, Cranleigh rewards those who take the time to explore it properly. Here's our guide to making the most of a day in one of Surrey's most charming villages.

Begin with breakfast at Joanna's Boutique Tea Room

Every good day deserves a proper start, and Joanna's is exactly that. Renowned for its exquisite afternoon tea, it's equally lovely for breakfast or a relaxed lunch. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, the sort of setting that makes you want to linger over a second cup.

It's also available for exclusive hire, making it a beautiful choice for a hen celebration, birthday gathering, christening, or an intimate wedding reception. If you have something special to plan, it's well worth reaching out to them early.

Get outside: walks and fresh air around Cranleigh

One of Cranleigh's greatest pleasures is how quickly the countryside opens up around it. Knowle Park is right on the doorstep, a beautiful green space that's perfect for a morning walk or a gentle cycle, and well loved by locals for very good reason.

The Downs Link is another wonderful option, following a former railway line through some truly lovely Surrey and West Sussex countryside. It's largely traffic-free, equally suited to walking and cycling, and the kind of route that reminds you why this corner of England is so special. Whether you follow it for twenty minutes or a couple of hours, it never disappoints.

If you'd like a little company on your walk, the Cranleigh Tuesday Long Walk is a free, organised weekly walk around the Waverley area, led by trained volunteers. It's relaxed and genuinely welcoming. Everyone walks at their own pace, no equipment is needed beyond comfortable shoes, and it's a lovely way to meet people and discover the local landscape at the same time.

A morning on the High Street

Cranleigh High Street deserves a proper wander rather than a rushed dash. The collection of independent businesses here gives it a character you simply won't find on a high street dominated by chains, and there's nearly always something to discover.

The Tog Boutique at 105 High Street is our own little corner of the village, and we're very glad to be part of it. We stock a carefully curated edit of women's clothing and accessories from some of our favourite independent European brands including Saint Tropez, ICHI, Soaked in Luxury, Sugarhill Brighton, and Part Two. Everything we choose is chosen because we genuinely love it, and our team are always on hand if you'd like a little help finding something you'll wear for years.

Rawlings of Cranleigh is a family-run butcher that has been a fixture on the High Street since 1982, and its reputation is thoroughly deserved. Proprietor Robert Rawlings has spent his career in the trade, and it shows in the quality of everything on the counter. From beautifully prepared roasting cuts to handmade sausages produced on-site and a wonderful deli counter stocked with award-winning pies and artisan cheeses, it's a shop that takes real pride in what it does. If you're planning a Sunday roast or a summer gathering, this is your first stop.

The Hair Boutique, owned by Rachel Helen, is an independent salon that takes its craft seriously. Using Wella for colour, Davines for styling, and Global Keratin treatments, it's the sort of place where the quality of the work speaks for itself. They offer a free consultation for new clients, well worth taking up if you're considering a change.

Browns Gin Bar

Browns is one of those places that earns its reputation quietly and keeps it deservedly. Passionate about quality and proudly championing Surrey produce, they pair beautifully crafted gin infusions with loose leaf teas for what they aptly describe as "gin o'clock worthy moments." Whether you're after a relaxed afternoon drink or a proper evening out, it's exactly the kind of independent bar that makes a High Street worth visiting.

The Thursday market

If you can time your visit for a Thursday, Cranleigh's weekly market is a lovely addition to the day. A chance to browse local produce and independent stalls, and to see the village at its most community-spirited.

Cranleigh Arts Centre and Leisure Centre

The Arts Centre on the High Street is a genuine local treasure. It runs a thoughtful and varied programme of theatre, live music, film, exhibitions, and workshops throughout the year, the kind of cultural offering that most villages could only dream of. It's always worth checking their listings before your visit, as there's usually something on that's worth planning around.

Cranleigh Leisure Centre is equally impressive for a village of this size. With a modern gym, a 25m main pool, a smaller pool, group exercise studios, squash courts, soft play facilities, a café, and a health suite with sauna, it's a genuinely well-equipped facility. If you're staying in the area for a few days, a morning here is a very good way to start one of them.

Making a day of it

Cranleigh sits in a beautifully useful spot for combining with other parts of Surrey and West Sussex. It's within easy reach of Guildford, Horsham, and the surrounding villages, making it a natural and very worthwhile stop on a broader day out in the area.
